Chin Surgery (Genioplasty)

The shape of the chin can be specifically changed with a genioplasty.  The size can be reduced or increased with the position of the chin moving back or forward as necessary.

There are a number of ways of accomplishing change in the shape of the chin.  One of the more simple techniques is to place an implant over the chin to push the chin forward .  Alternatively, and especially in younger patients Dr. Green prefers to use a technique which moves the bone itself after making a cut in the bone, and then fixing the bone in the new position.  The advantage of this technique is that an implant is not needed and the results are more permanent.

Often changing the position of the chin can provide a dramatic improvement in the facial appearance.  Sometimes this is associated with nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) because a small or recessive chin can give the impression of a larger nose.  Correction of the chin will often provide significant improvement in the balance of the face as a whole.

The operation is done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia.  The results are generally very gratifying to the patient because of the dramatic change that this can achieve.
