Natural Breast Augmentation with Fat Grafting
Moderate increase in size without implants.
Fat removed by liposuction can be used to achieve a natural breast augmentation with fat grafting. The fat is harvested using a gentle liposuction technique and washed and processed to prepare it for injection as a graft. This can be used to add volume to the breast just as it can be used in any other area of the body. The advantage is that no implant is necessary. It is breast augmentation with your own fatty tissue. Dr. Green has been doing fat grafting to the breast and other areas for many years and was an early adopter of this technique.
There are special considerations for natural breast augmentation with fat grafting. For many years this was considered taboo by the Plastic Surgery Society. This is because there was a concern that the grafted fat might cause calcification that would cause confusion in routine mammograms. In several studies this has been shown to be not as much of a concern because when the procedure is done carefully this is not so common and a good mammographer can tell the difference between fat necrosis calcification and calcification from breast cancer. The actual technique does not increase the risk for breast cancer.
Natural breast augmentation is ideal for someone who has lost volume from nursing etc. and has previously had larger breasts so that there is the skin available to allow for the extra fat. Of course one does need to have somewhere where the fat is in excess to harvest the fat from. If the breasts are small with tight skin, multiple stages may be needed to achieve the desired breast size.
The procedure is done under general anesthesia in the operating room at our State Licensed Surgery Center. Recovery is usually simple and quick since both the liposuction and the fat grafting are superficial and do not interfere with normal function.
Fat grafting to the breasts can also be used in special situations such as to improve the results with breast augmentation using implants, if the implants are visible because of the patient being very thin. Even a small amount of fat will mask these imperfections and improve the results dramatically.
Fat grafting to the breasts can also be used to correct asymmetry and problems of abnormal breast shape, such as tubular breast deformity.
