Liposuction and Fat Grafting

Liposuction and Fat Grafting

The Most Popular Procedures in our Practice

Liposuction modelBody contouring with liposuction or fat grafting is a wonderful option for individuals that struggle with stubborn excess fat. Modern technology enables plastic surgeons like Dr. Rodney Green to carefully remove the fat and improve the contour in that area of the body. The result is a more proportional and attractive body shape, which has psychological benefits, too. Body contouring patients usually experience a tremendous boost in self-confidence, thanks to their improved physique.

Candidates for Liposuction

Candidates for liposuction are usually individuals with localized areas of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise. Suitable candidates should be in good physical health, and be close to their ideal weight. (Individuals that are overweight or obese are not the best candidates for surgery.) Good candidates should also have good skin elasticity so the skin can conform around the treated area after the underlying fat has been removed. Individuals with loose or lax skin should understand that they may not achieve optimal results with liposuction, and should explore alternative body contouring treatment options like abdominoplasty.

Liposuction Treatment Details

Plastic surgeons have their own way of performing liposuction. Dr. Green prefers the “super-wet” or tumescent approach to liposuction. This allows for the safe removal of fat with minimal blood loss. If a large area is being treated, general anesthesia is administered; on the other hand, local anesthesia can be used for minor touch-up procedures. Liposuction is generally performed on an outpatient basis.

To begin, Dr. Green injects a saline solution into the area to be treated; this solution contains local anesthetic and epinephrine, which shrinks the blood vessels. The fatty tissue responds to the solution by firming up and becoming easier to remove. Dr. Green uses gentle suction to remove the excess fat through tiny incisions. He also sculpts the remaining fat for a smooth contour.

Liposuction modelAfter removing the desired amount of excess fat, Dr. Green closes the incisions with sutures and places a compression garment around the treated area. This garment puts gentle pressure on the healing tissues and controls post-operative swelling and scarring.

Recovering from Liposuction

Liposuction patients need a companion to escort them home after surgery. For the first week or two, their energy levels may be low and range of motion may be limited. There may be minor swelling, bruising and tenderness in the treated area. If the patient experiences discomfort or pain, oral medication can be prescribed by Dr. Green.

Dr. Green checks on his patients during the first week to monitor their recovery. Patients are advised to wait for his clearance before returning to work, exercise, socializing and other activities. Most patients return to work within a week or so, depending on the type of job and the extent of treatment.

More about Fat Grafting

Post liposuction modelFat grafting is another body contouring procedure that improves the shape of the body. Dr. Green removes excess fat from one area of the body and injects it into another area that needs volume and shape, such as the buttocks. This is a great option for anyone that wants to sculpt a flabby area and enhance a volume-deficient area at the same time. Many individuals prefer to use their own fat to enhance their body instead of an artificial implant device.

Fat grafting is performed on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia is used for patient comfort. To begin, Dr. Green uses liposuction techniques to remove surplus body fat from an area such as the hips, thighs or abdomen. Then, Dr. Green uses different techniques to prepare the fat for injection depending on the area and volume of fat to be injected. For buttocks gravity separation is usually used because of the large volume and need for efficiency. For breasts and for face a centrifuge is used to provide a more precise and pure fat graft. Mesh filtration is also sometimes used.

Then, Dr. Green injects the prepared fat into the desired area of the body such as the buttocks or the breasts. He makes the injections strategically in order to yield the most proportional and attractive contours depending on the particular needs of the patient. For example, if he injects the buttocks, he may concentrate on adding more volume to the upper quadrant of the buttocks to give it a “lifted” appearance, or the lower part of the buttock to create a more heart shaped buttock.

After fat grafting, patients are released to recover at home. The donor and treated areas might be swollen, bruised or tender after surgery. However, these side effects subside quickly. Dr. Green provides comprehensive instructions for recovery; he also follows up with his patients after surgery to monitor their healing progress.
